In celebration of the school’s 50th anniversary Southern Alamance HS and the Southern Alamance Patriots Booster Club are proud to announce the first SAHS Athletic Hall of Fame class. The inductees are:

1. Drew Coble. Drew was inducted in the category of Distinguished Graduate. While at SAHS Drew played football, basketball, and baseball. He is a 1966 graduate of the school. Drew went onto play baseball at Elon College from 1971-74. He worked as a MLB Umpire from 1982 to 1999 and was privileged enough to work the 1991 World Series.
2. Eddie Foster. Eddie was inducted in the category of Outstanding Athlete. Eddie was a wrestler while at SAHS and graduated in 1975. Eddie was a 1974 and 1975 NCHSAA Wrestling Champion for the school. He is still the only 2 time individual state champion in Southern’s history. Eddie went on to wrestle at Appalachian State University.

3. Darnell Glover. Darnell was a football, wrestling, and track star at SAHS and graduated in 1971. He was inducted in the category of Outstanding Athlete. During the 1970-71 school year Darnell was selected most outstanding football back, wrestler and track competitor at Southern. He wrestled at North Carolina A&T from 1972 to 1975.

 

4. Kay Holt. Kay was inducted as both an Outstanding Athlete and a Distinguished Graduate. Kay was in the SAHS Class of 1981 and participated in volleyball, basketball, and softball while at Southern. In 1981 Kay was chosen the NC 3A/4A Softball Most Valuable Player. She played softball at UNC Chapel Hill from 1982 to 1985. In 2002, highlighting a career of federal service, Kay received the Distinguished Civilian Service Award awarded by the Secretary of the Navy.

5. Terry Johnson. Terry was inducted as a Distinguished Graduate and Lifelong Contributor. Terry was a part of the Class of 1969 and played football, baseball, wrestling, and track at Southern. He attended East Carolina University on a football scholarship from 1970 to 1973. Terry served as the school’s booster club President from 1992 to 1994. In 2002 Terry was elected Alamance County Sheriff and still serves the community in that position
6. David Vaughn. David, a member of the SAHS class of 1972, was inducted as an Outstanding Athlete, Coach, and Administrator. David played football, basketball, and baseball while at Southern. David played baseball at both UNC Pembroke and Elon College from 1973 to 1975. He was the coach of the 1988 State Championship Baseball team. He also served as the school’s Athletic Director from 1988 to 2006.

7. Lou Williamson. Lou was chosen as an Outstanding Athlete. She is a 1977 graduate of SAHS and played volleyball, basketball, and softball for the school. Lou played both softball and basketball at Elon College from 1977 to 1981. She was chosen Most Outstanding Female Athlete at Elon in 1980 and 1981.
8. The 1965 State Championship Baseball Team. Team members are: James H. Foster (coach), Billy Marlette (pitcher), Tommy Jobe (third baseman), Charlie Griffin (outfield/first base), Ernie York (centerfield), Howard Ursery (shortstop), Steve Madden (left field), Terry Scott (pitcher), Buck Wood (second base), Craig Holt (shortstop), Jerry Ward (catcher-first base), Drew Coble (catcher), Rufus Griffin (third baseman) Kenneth Elliott (pitcher), Raymond Herring (right field), Rickey Zachary (pitcher), Wesley Wellons (pitcher), Steve Payne (infielder), John Teer (equipment manager), Phillip Griffin (batboy), Russell Woody (catcher), John Doss (pitcher), Bill Fogleman (outfielder) All of the inductees were formally re-introduced to the Southern HS community at halftime of our football game September 17. The next day there was an induction ceremony and luncheon for our inductees.
